Perspective

When my children were young (4-12 years) they were best of friends with another family group.  Those particular children had a diversity of racial backgrounds – African American, Native American, and Mexican.  My girls were talking about racial diversity and announced they did not know anyone not white.

My children did not consider their friends by color.  They considered their friends by name- Rees, Wyatt, Manny,  Liam and Mia.  If asked to describe their friends, my girls knew of color differences.  However, they knew their friends were the same — playful, bright, growing children.  That was how they thought about their friends  - who are you!

I wonder how differently our world would function if we did not use racial descriptions but names.

it’s hard to dislike people once you know them as friends and people instead of “groups”
