Last week Tom sent a note to the elders inviting them to tell the shepherd he was wrong about camp promotions. Since that time, the elders have not spoken. (It is possible they answered Tom, but they did not advise the shepherd of it if they did.)
I am glad the elders did not undermine the shepherd. However, where is the support? Where is the answer that says at the least, you know we will stand behind you?
The elders are supposed to lead the church. That means giving a voice when needed. Their silence can be interpreted in many ways, not the least of which is “hold on we are going to yank the rug out from under you in a moment.”
Want to know how Ed arose to power? It is simple. He spoke. He let the person asking know there were some boundaries. It actually emboldened people to do things because at least the rules were articulated. Who wants to try ministry if the rules might change just when it starts to matter?
The church needs leadership. The church needs a voice. The church needs the elders to make decisions and lead the church.
Like you my FRIEND, I get things better when applied to relationships like marriage and parenting……………… that being said, if my kids said something to my hubby ABOUT me and he didn’t remind them of their boundries then my kids would perceive that as agreeing with what they said! As though dad took side with them AGAINST mom. This would be dangerous territory. They outnumber us (lol) we can NEVER EVEN APPEAR divide. I hope the same should be true in th church, the elders and the shepherd should NEVER EVEN APPEAR divided.
I agree boundries are vital! But if those boundries aren’t enforced by the “keepers” of them, what good are they? They become mere art on the wall having no power. Elders are to not only stand behind the Shepherd but stand alongside him as a trustworthy companion.
