When the spring comes my family can be seen indulging in pop culture. We give several hours a week to viewing “American Idol”.
In my hours of viewing I have noticed a theme. Every week several contestants are asked what it would mean to them to win the contest. And all of them answer the same way – “It would mean everything (or the world) to me.”
I wonder at the meaningless of such an answer. Are we such a shallow culture that we cannot think about what fame would actually mean?
To win would be money, fame, and life altering status. The current regiments would become meaningless. Money would become irrelevant. Relationships would become more difficult to maintain, and the feeling of success would be abundant.
People would want my autograph. I would be invited to more gatherings, and my opinion would be sought. I would be an expert and a star.
I might be badgered for donations. I might be swarmed. The paparazzi might pursue me. I might lose all privacy.
What it would not mean is everything. All of my dreams would not come true. All of my problems would not be solved. But, I would have many different opportunities and the money to try many things not tried before.
If you won American Idol, it WOULD mean you can sing!
If I’ve said it once I’ve said it a million times, People exaggerate way too much! “It would mean everything” indeed!
tried to leave a comment above. wanted you to know that you and the shepherd are in my prayers.
